Special Issue: Exploring New Literacies for Artificial Intelligence

In recent years, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies has revolutionized various aspects of our lives, including communication, education, healthcare, and entertainment. As AI technologies continue to evolve, so does the need to develop new literacies that enable individuals to navigate, understand, and engage with AI-driven content and systems critically and effectively. The Journal of Literacy and Technology invites researchers and scholars to contribute to a special issue focused on “Exploring New Literacies for Artificial Intelligence.”

This special issue explores the intersection of literacy and AI by investigating the new skills, competencies, and literacies that individuals need to engage meaningfully with AI technologies. We welcome original research articles, reviews, case studies, and theoretical perspectives that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • AI-informed Reading and Writing:  How are traditional literacy practices evolving in response to AI-generated content? What new reading and writing skills are necessary to comprehend and create AI-generated texts?

  • Critical AI Literacy: How can individuals be empowered to critically evaluate AI-generated information, including biases, misinformation, and ethical implications?

  • AI and Digital Citizenship: What does responsible AI use entail, and how can individuals be educated to participate ethically in AI-mediated online environments?

  • AI and Multimodal Literacies: How does AI impact multimodal communication, such as using images, videos, and interactive media? How can individuals navigate and create AI-augmented multimodal texts?
  • AI in Education: What are the implications of AI for educational practices and curricula, and how can educators foster AI literacy among students?
  • AI and Language Learning: How can AI technologies be integrated into language learning environments, and what literacy skills are required to engage with AI-powered language tools effectively?
  • AI and Personalization: How can individuals develop the ability to navigate personalized content and recommendations driven by AI algorithms?
  • AI and Identity Construction: How does AI influence the construction of online identities, and how can individuals develop literacies to manage their digital personas in AI-mediated spaces?
  • AI and Policy: What types of policies do educational institutions need to navigate academic integrity in the student use of AI for classwork? What considerations do policymakers need to include in policies about academic integrity regarding AI?
